Biomagnetism Basics: Which Size Magnet Should I Use?

Let’s talk about magnet size.

Because yes, it does matter. And not in a perfectionist, overthink-it-to-death kind of way. Just in a "use the right tool for the job" kind of way.

If you’ve ever stared at your set of magnets wondering, Which one should I use for this?—you’re not alone. Here's how I break it down for clients, students, and everyone who’s ever sent me a panicked DM about slapping a large magnet on their eyebrow (please don’t).

Small Biomagnetism Magnets

Best for: Precision work and small surface areas

Great for:

  • Sinuses

  • Thyroid

  • Temples and jaw

  • Acupuncture-style placements

  • Children, babies, and pets

Small magnets are great when you need accuracy. If you're working on the face, neck, hands, or feet, or placing magnets on acupuncture points, this is your size. They're also ideal for smaller bodies, which is why they’re my go-to for kids and animals. Their size just makes them a better fit, literally.

Another major bonus? Small magnets are perfect for creating magnet sandwiches, where one magnet is placed on each side of a piece of clothing or fabric, to hold them in place without the need for tape. Super helpful in hard-to-tape spots or when you’re on the go.

Medium Biomagnetism Magnets

Best for: Everyday use and general support

Great for:

  • Liver and gut protocols

  • Lymphatic drainage

  • Hormonal balancing

  • Immune support

  • Any biomagnetism pair

Medium magnets are your ride-or-die. They work with most common biomagnetic pairs and are easy to place, wear, and strong enough to do the job without being bulky or uncomfortable.

If you're placing magnets on your belly, chest, pelvis, arms, or feet, mediums are probably perfect. I always recommend these as a starting point if you’re only getting one size. They’re kind of like the yoga pants of Biomagnetism: flexible, comfortable, and incredibly useful.

Large Biomagnetism Magnets

Best for: Broad areas and deeper coverage

Great for:

  • Low back pain

  • SI joints and hips

  • Legs, thighs, and glutes

  • Spinal protocols

  • Postural support and circulation work

Large magnets cover more surface area, which is helpful when working with the body’s larger muscle groups and structural support systems. They’re ideal for decompressing at the end of a long day, boosting circulation, and relieving tension that shows up deep in the tissue.

Tip: I love throwing a pair of large magnets in my back jean pockets or leggings when my lower back is tight or I’ve been sitting too long.

So… which size should you use?

If you're still unsure, start with mediums. They're the most versatile and cover most use cases.

From there, consider:

  • Size of the body part you’re working on

  • How precise does the placement need to be

  • Comfort and ease of taping or wearing magnets for 20+ minutes

A note on strength vs size

People often assume big magnets = more powerful magnets. However, in Biomagnetism, the Gauss strength is more important than physical size. What you want is a surface Gauss of at least 1,000+, which all of Biomagnetic Health magnets meet or exceed.

Larger magnets tend to have higher pull strength (how hard they snap together), which makes them seem "stronger", but the're not necessarily more effective. Small and medium magnets be just as effective as larger magnets if they have the proper surface Gauss strength.

Avoid refrigerator magnets or anything labeled “therapeutic” without actual specs. If you’re ever in doubt, check the strength with a gauss meter or buy from a source you trust.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right magnet size isn’t about getting it “right”, it’s about making your practice feel more intuitive and less frustrating. Start simple, stay curious, and give yourself room to experiment.
