Biomagnetic Basics: How Long Should I Leave Magnets On?

Have you found yourself sitting there with magnets on, wondering, “Okay… so how long am I supposed to keep these here?” I definitely asked the same question when I first started using biomagnetism. And over the years, after placing thousands of magnets on myself and others, here’s what I can confidently say: You don’t need to overthink it.
There’s a rule we use in the Biomagnetic world called the Latitude Rule, and it makes magnet timing easy to figure out no matter where you live.
But before we get to that, let’s clear something up: For most magnet placements, longer doesn’t mean better. The goal of a typical session is to balance pH, and once that happens, the reaction is complete. It's an all-or-nothing process, so keeping magnets on beyond that point doesn’t add any extra benefit. But, as with most things in life, there’s an exception or two. Let’s break it all down.
The Latitude Rule: Your Timing Formula

Here’s the rule to figure out how long magnets should stay on: Take the latitude of your current location and divide it in half. That number is the recommended time in minutes.
So if you live at 40 degrees latitude, your magnets would stay on for about 20 minutes. Live closer to the equator? Your time will be shorter.
Farther north or south? A little longer.
Why does this work? Because once magnets do their job of balancing pH, it’s done. Think of it like flipping a light switch; once it’s on, it’s on. You don’t need to keep pressing the button.
The Exception: Acute Injuries and Post-Surgical Healing
While the Latitude Rule is the go-to for most magnet placements, there’s one clear exception: when you're working with an acute injury or recovering from surgery.
In those situations, you're not just aiming to balance pH. You're also trying to support healing by improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and giving the body extra help.
This is where magnets can stay on much longer—even for a few hours at a time.
Here are a few examples where extended magnet use might be helpful:
You just had a sprain or strain and want to calm swelling
You’re in the first few days after surgery
You’re managing localized pain or inflammation (like a pulled muscle or bruised area)
You’re using magnets to support urinary discomfort, like a UTI
In these cases, magnets aren't just resetting pH. They’re giving your tissues ongoing support as they repair and recover. That said, this doesn’t mean more is always better. Once the acute phase has passed, it’s best to return to the Latitude Rule for daily use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sleep with my magnets on?
In most cases, it’s not necessary, and it’s not something I usually recommend. Once the pH balancing effect has taken place, keeping the magnets on overnight doesn’t give you any added benefit.
The only time I suggest leaving magnets on longer is if you're dealing with something like a UTI, a sprain, or post-surgical healing, and the magnets are actively helping with discomfort or swelling. Otherwise, it’s better to remove them before bed.
What if I forget and leave a magnet on too long?
Totally fine. It happens to everyone at some point. If you fall asleep with them on or forget and leave them in place longer than planned, don’t stress. There’s no harm in going over the suggested time; it’s just not needed for most pairs. Biomagnetism isn’t all-or-nothing based on timing precision. You're still doing something good for your body.
Is there a benefit to wearing magnets all day?
For general pH balancing? No. More time doesn't equal more benefit once the shift has happened. But in certain situations—like injuries, recovery, or localized inflammation—longer wear time can be helpful. It really depends on what you’re using them for.
Here’s What I Want You to Remember
You don’t need to overthink how long to leave your magnets on. The Latitude Rule makes it simple; for most situations, that’s all you need. Unless you’re using magnets to support an injury or healing after surgery, there’s no reason to leave them on for hours. A short, intentional session is often the most effective.
But if you are dealing with an injury, post-op recovery, or want more clarity on placement and protocols, the Biomagnetism Membership is a great place to get support. Inside, I walk you through my most-used protocols with short, easy-to-follow videos you can reference anytime. It’s designed to take the guesswork out of the process—because healing should feel empowering, not overwhelming.
